Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the current epidemiology of opioid use among pregnant and parenting women;
  2. Use appropriate strategies to obtain patients’ informed consent and ensure shared decision making between the pregnant woman or new mother and the healthcare provider;
  3. Recognize risk factors for potential misuse and diversion of prescribed opioid medications among pregnant women;
  4. Use state Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMP) data to obtain a history of the prescriptions for reportable controlled substances dispensed to the patient;
  5. Educate and engage pregnant patients with OUD in shared decision making about different treatment options and the potential social, medical and legal consequences of each medication and of opioid use during pregnancy;
  6. Select appropriate pharmacotherapy for initiating medication to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD) in pregnant women with OUD and adjust medication in response to the physiological changes of pregnancy;
  7. Choose appropriate techniques to identify and treat neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and neonatal opioid withdrawal (NOW);
  8. Prepare and implement discharge plans for mothers and infants; and
  9. Coordinate care among healthcare professionals to address the comprehensive needs of the patient and infant.
